Larnaca (also known as Larnaka) is a city in Cyprus, as well as a district. The city of Larnaca, located on the southern coast of Cyprus, was originally founded by Mycenaean-Achaean Greeks as Kition (also known as Citium). Kition is the oldest ancient city in Cyprus. Over the years, Kition has suffered repeatedly from earthquakes, so the ruins aren't completely intact. The modern city of Larnaca is the third largest city on the island, and it's the second largest commercial port in Cyprus.
Within the district of Larnaca, some of the villages are Tochni, Choirokoitia, Lageia, Vavla, Kato Drys, and Skarinou.
Tochni Village is a small village within the Larnaca district of Cyprus.
Choirokoitia Village is a village within the Larnaca district. This village is known for the Choirokoitia Neolithic Archaeological Site, which is considered to be one of the oldest settlements in Cyprus. Last year, we visited this archaeological site; to view my previous blog post, please click HERE.
Lageia Village is a small village within the Larnaca district.
Vavla Village is another small village within the Larnaca district of Cyprus. The Agios Minas Monastery, which is currently being utilized as a convent, is located near this village.
Kato Drys Village is a small village that's located near the Agios Minas River. This village is pictured on the one pound Cypriot note; the Cypriot pound is no longer used in Cyprus, since the euro is now in circulation. Saint Neofytos was born in Kato Drys Village in 1134. For more details about Saint Neofytos and the Agios Neofytos Monastery, please view my previous blog post, by clicking HERE.
Skarinou Village is a small village within the district of Larnaca. Within the village, there's the Fatsa Wax Museum, which is the only wax museum in Cyprus.
According to the museum's brochure:
The Fatsa Wax Museum, which opened in 2005, includes over 150 sculpted wax models of Cypriot life from the Neolithic period to the present day. Due to the price, we decided not to visit this museum...maybe another time.
